Softball Swept By No. 5 Texas Lutheran

GEORGETOWN, Texas — The No. 5-ranked Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs won both games of today's doubleheader to sweep the Southwestern softball team in the weekend's three-game series.

Game 1: Texas Lutheran 6, Southwestern 0

Texas Lutheran starting pitcher Sydney Ouellette (5-3) threw a complete-game shutout, striking out two and allowing only three hits with no walks in seven innings.

Southwestern opened the game with a promising start at the plate, getting back-to-back singles from Maddie Mefford and Jodi Millhouse to lead off the bottom of the first. However, Oullette quickly quelled the momentum by retiring the next 11 hitters in order.

Sav Frieze broke Southwestern's slump in the bottom of the fifth with a single but was later caught stealing, and the Pirates did not have another hitter reach safely.

Southwestern starting pitcher Madison Vela and the defense were solid in their own right, holding Texas Lutheran scoreless through the first four innings.

Texas Lutheran broke through in the fifth inning, stringing together three hits and two walks, scoring on an RBI single to left field by Madison Johnson and a walk drawn by Laura Hernandez with bases loaded.

Mattigan Aga replaced Vela sixth after the latter surrendered a double and walk to start the inning. The Bulldogs added four more runs, getting back-to-back two-RBI doubles from Casey Martin and Olivia Prinz.

Game 2: Texas Lutheran 8, Southwestern 1

Texas Lutheran starting pitcher Ashlyn Strother improved to a perfect 12-0 with a complete-game victory, striking out seven in seven innings of work, surrendering just one hit and one run with one walk.

Southwestern took an early lead, getting a solo home run off the bat of Frieze in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Bulldogs answered with six runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by Prinz's grand slam home run. Texas Lutheran added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Southwestern drops to 7-17 with a 3-6 conference record. The Pirates will host Hardin-Simmons for a doubleheader on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
