GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern University softball team could notget the offense rolling as the Pirates lost both ends of a doubleheader to the St. Edwards Hilltoppers Saturday evening. St Edwards won 9-1 in game one and took game two 12-1.

Game 1 – St. Edwards 9, Southwestern 1

The Hilltoppers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, taking the early lead. When it came time for the Pirates to bat, Maddie Mefford slugged the ball to center field, giving her a double and earning an RBI with Tori Montemayor to score for the Pirates, making the game 2-1. However, St. Edwards came back in the second inning and the Hilltoppers tacked on two more in the third to score three runs off of an error and make the game 5-1. The Pirates battled to get back in the game and get some runs, however, the Hilltoppers defense kept the Pirates at bay and St. Edwards scored four more runs to end the first game 9-1.

Game 2 – St. Edwards 12, Southwestern 1

Both the Pirates and Hilltoppers defense kept each other from scoring any runs in the top and bottom of the first inning. However, St. Edwards quickly picked back up and scored two runs against the Pirates in the second and third inning, making the game 2-0. In the fourth inning, the Hilltoppers gained momentum scoring four runs to extend their lead over the Pirates. Southwestern still struggled to score any runs against the St. Edwards defense in the bottom of the fourth, making the game 6-0. In the fifth inning, St Edward's kept the scoring streak and hit a home run, to total six more runs to extend the lead. In the bottom of the fifth, the Pirates fought to keep the game going and loaded the bases. Montemayor singled to shortstop, allowing Jessey Nunez to reach home base and score the Pirates' first run. Still, with the bases loaded, the Pirates hoped to make their way back in the game. But St. Edward's pitcher battled Kaylee White and Mefford on the mound and successfully struck both Pirates out to end the game 12-1 in the fifth. Southwestern softball drops to 1-3 in-season play.

Southwestern prepares for their first conference series against the University of Dallas next weekend in Georgetown, Texas. The Pirates will play a doubleheader Friday, March 6 at 5 and 7 p.m. and will finish their final game on Saturday, March 7 at 1 p.m.
