SOFTBALL DOMINATES IN FINAL GAMES BEFORE CONFERENCE

The Southwestern University softball team made the most of their final double-header before heading into conference action by sweeping LeTourneau, 10-2 and 5-0. The wins improve the Pirates to 9-11 overall while the Yellow Jackets fall to 7-10 overall.

After retiring the side in the top of the first, Southwestern got rolling in game one. Two Pirates reached on errors and a base hit by 3B Katelyn Gola loaded the bases for 1B Kat Hoover with one out. Hoover put the ball in play to short who elected to throw home. Meeker and Gola both scored when the catcher miss played the ball at home. DH Aly Pulver follow with an RBI single to center field that drove in P Kaitlyn Pavlicek for the third Pirate run of the inning. After the dust settled, the Pirates had posted five runs on the board in the first.

LeTourneau put upone run in response in the top of the second to cut Southwestern's lead to four, 5-1.

The Pirates pushed ahead further in the fourth when a lead off single by Meeker and sacrifice bunt by Gola were followed by a pair of doubles by Pavlicek and Hoover. After four innings, Southwestern's lead was six, 7-1.

SU closed out the game with a 3-run fifth inning that put the Pirates up 10-2 to take the run-rule win.

Pavlicek earned the win for Southwestern allowing two runs on eight hits. She struck out three and walked one. LeTourneau's Frazier garnered the loss.

Gola and Hoover both were 2-3 in game one with Gola bringing in two runs and scoring once.

In game two, the Yellow Jackets quickly loaded the bases in the first inning with one out. Maus got Bond to strike out swinging and forced Borsellino to pop out to Meeker at second to escape the jam.

Meeker's bunt single started the first inning for the Pirates. Wallace drilled one to center field that allowed Meeker to move around to third. Pavlicek's blooper to right field pushed Meeker across the plate and gave SU a 1-0 lead after one.

The Pirates scored one more in the second and three in the fourth and held the Yellow Jackets scoreless to take game two 5-0.

Lyndsy Maus earned the win for Southwestern in game two. She allowed zero runs and five hits while striking out four and walking two.

Pavlicek led the way offensively in game two with a 3-4 performance with one RBI. Taylor Turpin and Quincy Meeker both had two hits a piece in game two while Gola led in RBI's with two.

The Pirates open conference action at their next game. They begin a four game series against Hendrix on Saturday with a double header at Taylor-Sander Field in Georgetown, Texas beginning at 1:00 pm.
