Softball Splits Games at ASC Crossover

FARMER'S BRANCH, Texas - Southwestern University spent the weekend in Farmer's Branch as the only school invited to compete in the ASC Crossover. SU represented the SCAC well, splitting games over the weekend against some of the top teams in the nation.

The Pirates opened the weekend against the University of Ozarks and wasted no time making their presence known, posting two runs in the first inning on a single to right center by Haley Hughes to take an early 2-0 lead.

Amanda Ambrose's two-out double down the left field line drove in Abi O'Connor to give SU a 3-0 lead heading into the fifth inning. Ozarks managed to push one run across in the sixth but were stopped there as the Pirates won 3-1.

Kaitlyn Pavlicek reached base in every at-bat, going 2-2 and earning one walk. Ambrose also posted a multi-hit game with one RBI while Hughes posted two RBI's.

Lauren Zearfoss earned the win, her fourth of the season, by scattering five hits and allowing just one run while walking none and striking out 15.

Game two pitted Southwestern against UT Tyler once again. SU sought revenge after the Patriots took two games earlier in the week. After six scoreless innings UTT pushed three runs across with two outs in the top of the seventh to steal the game 3-0.

Five different Pirates posted single hits in the game. Lyndsy Maus garnered the loss with 3.2 innings of work.

Day two brought Southwestern face-to-face with the second-ranked team in the nation to start off the day, Louisiana College. It was a pitcher's duel through two innings but LC posted two runs in the third and three in the sixth while holding the Pirates to one hit to hand SU the 5-0 loss.

Zearfoss garnered the loss, allowing four runs on seven hits in five innings on the mound. Pavlicek was the lone Pirate to record a hit while Ambrose and Kayla Irvin reached base with walks.

Southwestern closed out the weekend with a big win over soon-to-be SCAC opponent Centenary College. A steady barrage of hits lead to 11 runs in the first three innings as SU cruised to an 11-3 win. Hughes came up huge in the game going 3-4 with three RBI's. Pavlicek was 2-4 with 3 RBI's while Ambrose and Tessa Galloway both had multi-hit games.

With the split SU moves to 6-7 on the year. They head to Seguin, Texas to take on Texas Lutheran for a double-header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
