Big Bats Fuel Double-Header Win

Big Bats Fuel Double-Header Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern's power was on full display at Sunday's double header against Our Lady of the Lake. The Pirates smacked four homeruns in the double header, winning game one 8-1 and game two 11-3 in six innings.

Southwestern busted the door down in the bottom of the first with two outs. Kaitlyn Pavlicek singled to right field and Hayley Hughes followed taking the first pitch over the left field fence, just below the scoreboard, to give the Pirates a two run lead.

Our Lady of the Lake responded with a homerun from Brittany Stone to dead center field to bring the count to 2-1.

Ashleigh Scott answered right back with her first collegiate home run, drilling it over the left field fence to give the Pirates a two run lead, 3-1, once again. Karen Ramirez was brought home later in the inning on Amanda Ambrose's slow roller to short to put SU up 4-1 through two.

Just like the first inning the Pirates scored two more with a single by Pavlicek followed by a homerun to the exact same location by Hughes to put SU up 6-1 at the end of three.

Lauren Zearfoss continued to be strong on the mound, scattering hits and the Pirate defense didn't see any real threat to score. SU notched two more runs in the sixth and Tamara Belilove came in relief in the seventh to close out the 8-1 win.

Hughes led the attack going 3-4 with two homeruns and five RBI's. Pavlicek also posted a 3-4 game and Abi O'Connor went 2-3 in game one.

Lyndsy Maus was dynamite to start game two, setting the Saints' batters down in order in the first and second innings and allowing just two base runners through four innings.

Southwestern pushed one across in the bottom of the fourth. Hughes hustled around from first on Kaylee Kucharski's deep ball to center with two outs, giving the Pirates a 1-0 lead.

The Saints strung a few hits together on Maus and scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead into the bottom half of the inning. The Pirates returned the favor and tied the game 2-2 on Tessa Galloway's single up the middle, driving in Ramirez from second base. Pavlicek put the nail in the coffin, however, with a grand slam to put the Pirates on top 6-2.

Kaitlyn Bourg sent one over the left field fence to lead-off the sixth to bring the Saints within three, 6-3. SU responded by doing one better, driving in two runs with two outs in the bottom half of the inning to move the count to 8-3. Scott ended the game with a three-run double to give Southwestern the 11-3 run-rule victory.

Maus earned her first win of the season allowing three earned runs on five hits while striking out six and walking none. Miller garnered the loss for the Saints.

Hughes led going 3-4 from the plate while Pavlicek posted a 2-4 game with five RBI's. Kucharski, Scott and Ambrose all posted multi-hit games in the win.

Southwestern hits the road for the first time this season to face soon to be SCAC-opponent Schreiner in Kerrville on Tuesday beginning at 1pm.
