Turnovers Cost Women's Basketball Against Schreiner

Turnovers Cost Women's Basketball Against Schreiner

GEORGETOWN, Texas — Sloppy play and a poor performance from the free-throw line cost the Southwestern women's basketball team its first conference defeat of the season, losing 71-62 to the Schreiner Mountaineers.

With its previous three games being canceled or postponed, Southwestern looked every bit the part of a team that hadn't played in three weeks. The Pirates more than doubled the Mountaineers in turnovers, committing 18 to Schreiner's nine, resulting in 24 points for the Mountaineers.

Half of Southwestern's turnovers were of the live-ball variety, with Schreiner's nine steals resulting in a 10-5 advantage in fastbreak points. The rest of Southwestern's miscues resulted from a team just a little off its rhythm, taking an extra step before making a move resulting in a traveling violation, or moving through a screen into an offensive foul.

The Pirates also shot just 13-for-22 (59.1 percent) from the free-throw line.

Ellie Ward led three Pirates in double figures with 16 points and three assists, hitting 5-for-11 from the field. Lauren Fulenwider poured in 15 points, shooting 5-for-13 from deep. Princess Roberts added 14 points and 12 rebounds off the bench.

Demauria Miles scored 16 points for Schreiner, hitting four 3-pointers. Nariyah Buggs added 13 points on four shots off the bench, doing most of her work from the free-throw line, where she was 6-for-7.

This season, Southwestern falls to 5-5 with a 1-1 conference record. The Pirates will play the Mountaineers again on Saturday in Kerrville at 6:00 p.m.
