AUSTIN — Turnovers and offensive rebounds plagued the Southwestern Pirates against the Concordia Tornados, resulting in a 55-44 loss in the season opener.

Both teams were frigid from the field, combining to shoot 26.3 percent for the game, including 23.3 percent from the 3-point line. Concordia compensated with volume, forcing 19 turnovers and grabbing 18 rebounds to take 20 more shots than Southwestern.

Freshman Jada Hollie was the only Pirate to score in double figures with 10 points, shooting 6-for-7 from the free-throw line while adding four rebounds, five assists, and two steals in 33 minutes.

Southwestern struggled early, missing all nine shots from the field in the first quarter but shooting 7-for-10 from the free-throw line to trail 9-7. The Pirates found their rhythm in the second quarter, outsourcing Concordia 19-11 to take a 26-20 lead at the half. The Pirates committed 10 turnovers in the second half and were outscored 35-18 after the break.
