Pirates Drop Rematch with Concordia Texas in Home Opener

GEORGETOWN - Turnovers doomed the Southwestern University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon as they fell in a rematch with Concordia Texas, 69-64 in overtime, in their home opener at the Robertson Center. 

The Pirates finished with 26 turnovers to only 14 by the Tornados. Southwestern shot 22 of 58 (38%) from the field and 18 of 28 (64%) from the free throw line. CTX struggled, shooting 22 of 77 from the field (29%) and 2 of 17 from deep (12%). The Pirates outrebounded the Tornados 49-48.

It was a hot start for the Pirate offense, as they soared out to an 18-8 lead midway through the first quarter, building off their 37 point second half from their last meeting on Tuesday. However, the Pirates cooled down as CTX outscored Southwestern 11-4 to close the gap to three at the end of the quarter.

Defense was the focal point of the second quarter as Southwestern maintained their lead, building it out to seven before CTX again finished the quarter strong, cutting deep into the Pirates lead. Southwestern would hang on and take a 35-34 lead at the end of the first half.

Concordia Texas took their first lead of teh game at 36-35 to start the second half, going on a 6-0 run for a 41-35 lead. Southwestern responded with an 11-4 run to retake the lead at 46-45, but CTX scored with under a minute left for a 47-46 lead going into the fourth.

Southwestern was able to retake the lead and build it to as many as six, but CTX came back and tied it with 30 seconds to play. Senior Madison Edwards hit a piar of free throws to move ahead 59-57, but a layup with nine seconds to play forced overtime.

Southwestern opened up a 62-59 lead in OT, but a 7-0 run throughout the next four minutes put CTX ahead 66-62 as they used strong free throw shooting to close the game out for the road win.

Junior Tori Carraway scored 11 points to go with eight rebounds while sophomores Zhazze Brown and Naomi Brown each scored 11 points off the bench. Junior Kelsey Faykus scored seven off the bench to go with two steals and seven boards. Brown and Edwards each had three assists while sophomore Cecily Woolfolk had six points, seven rebounds, and two blocks.

Mercedes Ellison led CTX with 15 points and eight rebounds while Alexis Torres scored 14 points off the bench.

Southwestern moves to 1-3 overall and will return to action tomorrow afternoon at 4 PM as they welcome in Howard Payne to the Robertson Center.
