St. Thomas' 3-point Shooting Too Much For Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team had a better showing against the University of St. Thomas Celts but still wound up on the wrong end of the numbers game, losing 74-58 at home.

Southwestern surrendered 14 more shot attempts, turning the ball over 22 times and giving up 11 rebounds, with St. Thomas converting 13 shots from behind the 3-point line. The Celts outscored the Pirates 39-6 from deep, led by Jazz Taylor's 5-for-5 performance for 15 points to go with eight assists and three steals.

Cecily Woolfolk led the Pirates with 21 points on 5-for-10 shooting, working her way through double teams to get to the free-throw line 15 times, converting 11. The Pirates' center also had nine rebounds, four blocks, two steals, and two assists.

Noel Pratts had 12 for the Pirates, puncturing the St. Thomas defense repeatedly while also grabbing nine rebounds and two assists. Zhazze Brown had 10 points and five rebounds, scoring eight in the Pirates' 26-point fourth quarter.

All five starters scored in double figures for St. Thomas, led by Sheridan Hopkins' 20 points on 6-for-17 shooting. Micayla Hamilton has 11 points on seven shots and Bresha Orange and Aerial Starks each had 10.

The Pirates finished 20-for-55 from the field (36.4 percent), including 2-for-10 from the 3-point line while shooting 16-for-26 (61.5 percent) from the free-throw line. The Celts shot better from long range (13-for-26, 50 percent) than overall (28-for-69).

With the loss, the Pirates drop to 7-14 on the season and 5-9 in conference play. Southwestern will hit the road next week, playing at Austin College on Friday, Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. and against Dallas on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m.
