Women's Basketball Shuts Down Centenary in Win

GEORGETOWN, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team put together a strong team defensive performance, defeating the Centenary Ladies 47-34 to avenge an earlier conference loss.

Southwestern struggled to score, missing open perimeter looks and failing to finish in the paint despite establishing deep position.

But if the Pirates couldn't watch their shots fall through the bottom of the net, they were going to make sure the Ladies wouldn't even get a clean look at the rim. Southwestern swarmed passing lanes, generating 17 steals, and patrolled the paint for five blocks.

On many defensive possessions, forward Noel Pratts was often the beginning and end, pressuring the ball to disrupt the Centenary offense then finishing the possession with a steal, tallying eight for the game to go with six points, six rebounds, two assists, and two blocks.

Cecily Woolfolk was the only player for either team in double figures, scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds with two blocks and two steals for her 10th double-double of the season.

Woolfolk struggled from the field, shooting just 2-for-11 against a steady stream of double teams. She made up for it by getting to the free-throw line, where she went 9-for-12.

The Pirates got an important boost from the bench, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Emma Lewis and seven points and three rebounds from Erin Toro, who sparked the Pirates early, attacking the seams of the Centenary zone defense.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 7-13 on the season and 5-8 in conference play. Southwestern will host the University of St. Thomas Celts tomorrow at 6:00 p.m.
