Women's Basketball Owns the Paint in Win Over Texas Lutheran

GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team dominated inside against Texas Lutheran University, controlling the paint on both sides to defeat the Bulldogs 56-50.

Prior to the game, center Cecily Woolfolk was honored for accumulating more than 1,000 career points and 600 career rebounds.

During the game, she added 20 more points and another 13 rebounds, recording her ninth triple-double of the season. Woolfolk overwhelmed Texas Lutheran center Abby Hroch, opening the game with six points on 3-for-4 shooting in the first quarter.

Southwestern moved the ball diligently, working ball screens to dribble handoffs to move the defense then punching it inside to Woolfolk, who finished a variety of drop steps and rip through moves inside. Her work provided structure for the Pirate offense, patiently accepting double teams and finding teammates wide open under the rim for five assists.

Texas Lutheran answered with a pair of 3-pointers and free throws in the first quarter to stay within three at 20-17 heading into the second.

The Southwestern defense suffocated Texas Lutheran in the second quarter with sound positional defense, limiting the Bulldogs to 2-for-18 shooting (11.1 percent), including an 0-for-4 quarter from deep to lead 33-25 at the break.

Southwestern struggled offensively in the third, shooting just 3-for-13 and committing four turnovers as TLU cut into the Pirate lead at 42-38 heading into the fourth quarter.

Texas Lutheran pulled to within three in the fourth quarter with 5:49 remaining but Woolfolk responded with two layups down the stretch and Noel Pratts hit four big free throws to seal the victory.

Pratts finished with seven points on five shots and Zhazze Brown had eight, hitting three difficult shots, including a pair of contested jumpers in the fourth quarter to keep Texas Lutheran at bay.

Three players scored in double figures for Texas Lutheran with Cami Davis' the most efficient of the trio at 30 percent shooting. Woolfolk controlled the paint defensively, recording five blocks, and the rest of the Pirates limited TLU to just 24.2 percent shooting.

With the win, the Pirates improve to 6-13 on the season and 4-8 in conference play. Southwestern will host Centenary and St. Thomas next weekend.
