GEORGETOWN, Texas – Facing the No. 7-ranked team in Division III, the Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team struggled in an 84-51 loss to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders.
Three starters scored in double figures for the Crusaders, who shot better from behind the 3-point line (11-for-20, 55 percent) than the field (34-for-65, 52.3 percent), torching the nets from everywhere except the free-throw line, where they hit 3-for-12.
Mary Hardin-Baylor opened the game on a 16-0 run, puncturing the Southwestern zone with passes to the interior followed by quick ball reversals for open shots, assisting on three of their first five made baskets.
Southwestern struggled against Mary Hardin-Baylor's size, moving the ball from side-to-side but rarely attacking the seams to strain the Crusader defense.
The Pirates struggled to get clean entry passes into Cecily Woolfolk, who was 2-for-4 in the first half as Southwestern trailed 39-19 at the break.
Southwestern adjusted in the third quarter, moving Woolfolk further from the basket, where her nimble feet gave her a quick first step against her counterparts and her strength prevented them from getting back into position, scoring seven points with a 3-for-3 performance from the free-throw line in the quarter.
Woolfolk finished with 12 points and five rebounds on 4-for-9 shooting.
The Crusaders simply had too many weapons at their disposal with a different player taking center stage in each quarter, getting seven points on four shots from Allaira Jones in the first, eight points on 3-for-3 shooting from Alexia Martin in the second, and 11 points on 5-for-6 shooting from Kendall Rollins in the third.
In the fourth, Fulenwider found her aggressiveness, hunting shots and showing off her marksmanship with 11 points on 4-for-5 shooting, hitting 3-for-4 from deep with a versatile shot. With enough spacing on the court, Pratts broke free for seven of her 13 points in the fourth quarter, shooting 2-for-4 from the field and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
With the loss, the Pirates drop to 2-4 on the season. Southwestern will travel for a road game against McMurry on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 5:30 p.m.
