Pirates Drop Season Opener to Redlands

REDLANDS, Cali. — The Southwestern University Pirates women's basketball team opened its season with a 63-49 loss to Redlands in the first game of the Redlands Tip-Off Classic. 

Cecily Woolfolk led Southwestern with a strong performance, opening the season with a double-double by scoring 18 points on 7-for-17 shooting with 14 rebounds and two blocks. Noel Pratts, starting at power forward in the Pirates' new small ball alignments, joined Woolfolk in double figures with 10 points on 4-for-10 shooting. 

The Pirates were doomed by a frigid second quarter in which Southwestern shot just 1-for-14 (7.1 percent) while committing six turnovers to give Redlands a 21-5 advantage in the second quarter and go into halftime leading 33-15. 

Woolfolk took over in the third, scoring 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting with six rebounds. But Redlands responded with four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to keep the game out of reach. 

Southwestern struggled from the field, shooting just 27.9 percent, including 7.7 percent from deep, but were able to get to the free-throw line 23 times, converting on 14. 

Redlands shot 8-for-21 from deep, including 4-for-5 from reserve Marisa Urbano-Sedlund, who led her team with 14 points as the only Redlands player in double figures. 

Southwestern will return to the court tomorrow to face Chapman at 4:00 p.m.
