IRVING, Texas - The Southwestern University women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to put away the Dallas Crusaders on Sunday afternoon at the Maher Center, 66-56, snapping a three game skid in the process.

Southwestern shot 23 of 74 (31%) from the field including four 3-pointers. On the other end, Dallas went 18 of 55 (32%) from the field and also connected on four 3-pointers. Southwestern forced Dallas into 18 turnovers while only giving it away 15 times. 

The Pirates dominated the boards, outrebounding Dallas 55-36, while also scoring 30 in the paint and 30 in second chance points. Southwestern also got a boost from the bench, getting 25 points on the afternoon.

Southwestern was unstoppable in the first quarter, shooting 10 of 18 (56%) including two 3-pointers to open up a 26-13 lead over the Crusaders thanks to seven points from junior Tori Carraway and five each from sophomore Zhazze Brown and senior Madison Edwards. The Pirates led 21-5 at one point in the opening quarter.

Things began to cool down in the second quarter as Southwestern only scored eight points in the quarter while Dallas was able to cut the deficit to single digits. The Pirates remained in control, taking a 34-26 lead into the break.

However, Dallas came out as the aggressor in the third quarter, going on a 14-0 run in the first five minutes to overtake the Pirates and suddenly lead 40-34. Looking to be in control, Dallas looked to take control on their home floor, but sophomore Naomi Brown had other ideas.

Brown, using a strong presence in the post, scored six of the next eight points for Southwestern to move back ahead 42-41. Sophomore Catherine Staskawicz hit a layup at the end of the quarter to give the Pirates a 44-42 lead going into the final quarter.

At one point down 40-34, Southwestern responded with a 17-2 run going into the fourth quarter as a huge offensive rebound and putback by Carraway capped the run with a 51-42 lead. A few possessions later, a runner by freshman Noel Pratts gave Southwestern a double digit lead at 55-44.

Dallas tried to piece together a run, but senior Brooke Swift put the game away for good with a dagger 3-pointer in the corner for a 58-47 lead, all but icing the game for the Pirates.

Naomi Brown and junior Kelsey Faykus each finished with 10 points while Brown pulled down eight boards, seven coming on the offensive end. Faykus also had eight rebounds and a pair of steals while Carraway and Edwards each had nine points. Swift finished with seven points, five assists, and three steals while Zhazze Brown had seven points, five rebounds, and three steals. Pratts had eight points and a pair of blocks.

Michelle DeCoud scored 20 points to go with 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks to lead Dallas.

Southwestern moves to 6-11 overall and 2-4 in the SCAC. They will return home on Friday as they welcome in Colorado College for a 7:30 PM tip-off.
