Pirates fall after icy first half

Pirates fall after icy first half

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Southwestern couldn't rebound from a ten point first half deficit and fell to Baruch in their first game back after Christmas to fall to 2-8 on the year.

SU scored just 17 points on six field goals in the opening frame, getting only six points in the first ten minutes of the game. The Pirates defense kept them in the game, however, as Baruch was held to just 27.9% shooting in the half.

Southwestern opened the second half strong, taking the lead briefly 31-30 after four free throws by Jordan Owens on consecutive possessions.

With ten minutes to play in the game the score remained tied 45-45. Baruch then embarked on a 15-9 run to go up 60-54 with under five minutes remaining and never allowed the Priates close enough to challenge for the win to close out the game 69-58.

Southwestern shot 32.8% from the floor and were outrebounded 56-44 while committing eight more turnovers in the loss.  Owens led SU with 25 points while Annie Bourne pulled down 15 rebounds. Chelsea Leeder added in 10 points.

The loss drops SU to 2-8 on the year. They remain in Las Vegas to face Occidental College on Saturday.
