Women's Basketball Loses in SCAC Semifinal

JACKSON, Miss. - The Pirates were within one point with just under two minutes to play in the semi-final game against Hendrix on Saturday night at the SCAC Conference Tournament but couldn't find the basket they needed to secure a spot in the finals, falling 77-67.

A seven point lead is the most either team to muster in the first half with Hendrix taking the advantage 21-14 with 8:55 to play in the half. Southwestern chipped away and took a one point lead the five minutes to go until halftime, 24-23, on a jumper by Shae Seagraves. HC snagged the lead back on the next play, however, and took a three point advantage over the Pirates into halftime, 32-29.

Southwestern was slow to start in the second half, allowing the Warriors to build a double digit lead for the first time in the game and found themselves down by 11, 44-33, with 14:33 on the clock. The Pirates steadily came back, eventually tying the game at 48-48 with 9:36 remaining on a jumper by Staley Mullins.

The lead bounced back and forth over the next nine minutes and the two teams were locked up for the sixth time at 58-58 with 5:31 to go.

Hendrix was the first to break the tie with a pair of free throws by Jordan Henderson and maintained the lead despite the constant pressure by the Pirates.

HC's 6-0 run put the Warriors up by six, 64-58, but SU masterminded a run of their own, pulling back within one point, 66-65 with 2:15 to play. Southwestern couldn't get the defensive stop they needed as Hendrix stayed just out of their reach, making free throws down the strech for the 77-67 final.

Anna Fareed led the way with 17 points while Chelsea Leeder added in 12 and Katelyn Bartel chipped in 11. Seagraves pulled down a game high 12 rebounds, leading all rebounds, even though the Pirates were out-rebounded 42-35. The Pirates were held to 39% from the floor and 25% from three point range for the contest while HC shot 41% from the floor and 35% from long range.

Southwestern ends the year at 17-10 overall. They say goodbye to three seniors, Jennifer Tindle, Shae Seagraves and Staley Mullins.
