PIRATES SPLIT WEEKEND SCAC GAMES

The Southwestern Pirates women's basketball team took their perfect SCAC record on the road in the new year and defeated Austin College on Friday night before suffering their first conference loss on Sunday at Colorado College. The win gives SU an impressive 10-2 record overall on the year and they move to 2-1 in the SCAC.

Southwestern jumped out to an early lead in the first half against Austin College, going up by nine points three different times in the opening frame before the 'Roos came streaking back to briefly lead 32-31 with 49 seconds remaining in the half. Chelsea Leeder (pictured) made one of two free throws just before the break to send the teams into the locker room tied at 32.

It was all Southwestern in the second half as the Pirates never relinquished the lead after Anna Fareed's opening three pointer. SU only committed five turnovers in the game and scored 22 points from the free throw line, winning 79-68.

Shea Seagraves led SU with 20 points while Leeder added 19 and Fareed 15. Staley Mullins pulled down a team high nine rebounds and four blocks in the win. AC's Kersti Marusich led all scorers with 21 points.

On Sunday afternoon Colorado College came out strong and built up a 16 point lead, 33-17 with 6:38 remaining in the first half. Southwestern kicked it in high gear and went on an 18-6 run to close out the half down by just four points, 39-35.

The Pirates continued to chip away at the lead and eventually snapped it up, 43-41, on a three by Seagraves with just under 18 minutes remaining. Mullins' jumper with 14:31 left gave SU a four point lead, 49-45, but they were unable to stay on top as the Tigers pulled ahead by six, 60-54, after Becky Luetjen's lay-up with 8:15 to play.

Colorado College went 4-5 from the field and 7-9 from the free throw line in the final five minutes of the contest to keep Southwestern from regaining the lead and took the 80-69 win.

Mullins led the way for SU with 19 points while Fareed and Seagraves both chipped in 16. Leeder added in 13 in the loss. CC's Luetjen led all scorers with 24 points.

Southwestern committed 21 turnovers in the game and were -7 in rebounds.
