SU Loses Fifth Straight in San Antonio, 68-52

On Saturday (Jan. 12) afternoon in San Antonio, TX, the SU men's basketball team shot just 31 percent from the floor in a 68-52 loss to Trinity University in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference play.

Mike Powell (Houston, TX/Episcopal HS) scored a team-high 12 points but it wasn't enough to lift the Pirates. SU kept it close in the first half, leading by as many as three. Trinity pulled away a little bit and led by six at the half.

In the second stanza, the Tigers opened up with a 18-1 run that put Southwestern in a 23-point hole. The Pirates could not get much closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Powell was 5-10 from the floor and 2-4 from three-point range in scoring 12. He also grabbed four rebounds. First-year Ryan Bill (Spring, TX/Oak Ridge HS) scored a career-high eight points, going 2-3 from beyond the three-point arc and 2-2 from the free throw line. Sophomore Ross Hayes (Houston, TX/Clements HS) pulled down a game-high eight rebounds.

The Pirates were simply out-shot in the game, connecting on just 31 percent (13-42) from the floor while Trinity hit 40 percent (22-55). SU kept it close on the boards, pulling down 33 to the Tigers' 36.

Southwestern's fifth loss in a row moves its record to 5-8, 2-3 while Trinity improves to 11-2, 4-1.

The Pirates return to Georgetown next weekend for a pair of games on Friday (Jan. 18) and Saturday (Jan. 19) against Birmingham-Southern College and Rhodes College.
