Men's Basketball Defeated by Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas — The Southwestern University Pirates men's basketball team struggled in an 81-72 loss to the Schreiner University Mountaineers. 

Four Pirates scored in double figures, led by Preston Hannah's 16 points on 4-for-7 shooting, including 3-for-3 from deep with a 5-for-5 performance from the free-throw line. Southwestern shot just 22-for-56 as a team (39.3 percent), however, including 6-for-23 from the 3-point line. 

Southwestern was able to offset its shooting woes at the free-throw line, where it finished 22-for-25 (88.0 percent), led by reserve guard Joel Martinez, who shot 6-for-6 from the line and finished with 11 points. 

Brandon Alexander scored 13 points and pulled down seven rebounds and reserve forward Andrew Puhl had 11 points on seven shots with four rebounds. 

The Pirates had just nine assists on 22 made field goals with 17 turnovers.

Schreiner outscored Southwestern 36-28 in the paint, shooting 28-for-61 (45.9 percent) as a team, including 8-for-27 from the 3-point line. Alex Dehoyos led four Mountaineers in double figures with 23 points on 8-for-20 shooting with eight assists and three steals. 

Paul Wells had 16 points on 11 shots with seven rebounds, Matthew Rindahl had 12 points and one rebounds with two steals and two blocks, and Cameron Davis had 11 points on five shots off the bench. 

With the loss, the Pirates drop to 8-9 on the season and 4-6 in conference play. The Pirates will travel to play Trinity University tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.
