Pirates Comeback Effort Falls Short at UMHB

BELTON, Texas - The Southwestern University men's basketball team outrebounded UMHB 49-38 including 23 second chance points, but a tough shooting night for the Pirates turned into a 99-89 road loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor on Sunday afternoon.

The Pirates shot 27 of 71 (38%) from the field including nine 3-pointers. Southwestern got to the free throw line 37 times including 26 makes (70%). The Cru shot it well, going 34 of 66 from the field (52%) including 17 3-pointers (45%) and 14 of 20 from the charity stripe (70%).

Throughout the first 15 minutes, it was an even matchup between the two sqauds, with no team able to take a lead over four points. However, the final five minutes was all UMHB. With the Cru leading 28-26, UMHB went on 15-8 run to close the half and take a 43-35 lead.

Southwestern tried to keep pace in the early parts of the second half, but the Cru was able to push their lead to as much as 14 in the first 10 minutes. Three minutes later, UMHB had their highest lead at 17 at 79-62.

The Pirates were not done there as they went on a furious 16-2 run to cut the deficit all the way down to three points at 81-78. However, back-to-back 3-pointers from the Crusaders pushed the lead back to nine as they were able to close things out at the free throw line for the win.

Senior Ryan Ogden scored 25 points to go with nine rebounds and a steal in the win while sophomore Ryan Wheeler scored 21 to go with seven rebounds and four steals. Sophomore Brandon Alexander scored 14 points to go with six boards off the bench while sophomore Kyle Howard scored five points to go with four steals and four assists. Wheeler and sophomore Luke Hicks each had three assists.

Sam Moore led UMHB with 22 points while Justin Gammill scored 18 points to go with eight rebounds off the bench.

Southwestern will head down to Trinity University this weekend for the Leslie Robinson Memorial Classic beginning on Friday at 8 PM with a matchup against Springfield.
