Pirate Can't Slow Red-Hot Tornados in Road Loss

AUSTIN, Texas - The Southwestern University men's basketball team turned the ball over 21 times and could not conain a red-hot Concordia Texas team as they fell to the Tornados 106-84 on Tuesday evening at the Concordia Fieldhouse.

CTX was nearly unstoppable from the field, shooting 40 of 69 (58%) including 8 of 25 from deep (32%) and 18 of 24 from the free throw line (75%) in the win. On the other end, the Pirates were 26 of 60 (43%) and 7 of 25 (28%) from deep. Southwestern was 25 of 37 (68%) from the free throw line.

The Tornados outrebounded the Pirates 40-34 and only turned the ball over 17 times.

Southwestern immediately found themselves playing catch-up, falling behind 7-0 in the first minute as the Tornados were about to build a 17-6 lead. Southwestern responded with an 11-2 run to cut the deficit down to two and even got as close as 21-20 before a 16-5 run pushed the lead to its highest at 12.

It was all Tornados down the stretch in the first half as they built their lead to 16 points, taking a 56-40 lead into the break.

From there, Southwestern had to fight to try and find a run to get them back into the game. However, the run could never quite sustain as the Pirates got as close as 11 points, but never could cut it under that as CTX eventially closed strong yet again down the stretch for the 22-point win on their home floor.

Sophomore Brandon Alexander scoerd 15 on the night while sophomore Ryan Wheeler chipped in 13 to go with four steals and four assists. Senior Ryan Ogden scored 11, pulled down eight rebounds, and had six assists while sophomore Joel Martinez scored nine off the bench on 3 of 3 shooting. Sophomore Jake Holmes and freshman Trenton Garrett each scored eight with Garrett going 3 of 3 from the field.

Joe Neal led CTX with 23 points and nine boards while Ephriam Price added 19 and Philip Meikle had 15.

Southwestern falls to 1-2 overall and will continue their tour of the ASC on Saturday as they head to Richardson for a 3 PM tip-off against Texas-Dallas.
