Pirates bounce back with 82-65 victory at Trinity on Saturday

SAN ANTONIO – Ryan Ogden poured in 24 points, and Southwestern rolled to an 82-65 victory over Trinity on Saturday evening at Sams Gymnasium.

Ogden, who shot 50 percent (7 of 14) from the floor, also had five rebounds, five assists and one steal in 35 minutes of action.

Chris Lee added 15 points, while Connor Kim and Zach Whitlock each scored 10 points. Whitlock also hauled in a game-high seven rebounds.

The Tigers (5-10, 1-3 SCAC) scored the first point of the game on a free throw by Matt Jones. However, the Pirates (6-10, 3-2 SCAC) responded with six straight, including five from Ogden, and never trailed again.

Southwestern shot 58.6 percent in the first 20 minutes and led 43-30 halftime.

The Pirates pushed their advantage to 54-37 after Lee buried a 3-pointer with 15:30 to play.

Trinity mounted a 9-0 run that trimmed the lead to eight points. The Tigers received a 3-pointer from A.J. Pullman with 6:09 left to cut the advantage to 62-55. However, Southwestern answered with a 7-0 spurt that included five free throws to push the lead to 14 points.

Trinity attempted one last comeback, pulling within 69-60 in the final two minutes. The Pirates again responded with another 7-0 run that put the advantage in double figures for good.

Southwestern, which shot 45.5 percent (25 of 55) on the night, will return home to host Centenary on Friday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Robertson Center.
