Pirates drop thrilling SCAC opener

SEGUIN, Texas – Just two days into the new year and Southwestern men's basketball has already posted a huge comeback, nail-biting finish and overtime contest in their SCAC opener against Texas Lutheran Saturday. Southwestern fell 91-87 in overtime.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Early in the first half the stage was set as both teams battled for control of the game. TLU finally snagged breathing room with a 16-point lead with 4:34 left in the first half.
  • Southwestern's defense went on lockdown and allowed the Bulldogs just five points the rest of the way and cut the deficit in half, trailing 43-35 at halftime.
  • It took just over six minutes for SU to make up the rest as Connor Kim hit a pair of free throws to tie the game 46-46 with 13:33 to play.
  • Southwestern took the lead with 13 minutes left but the Bulldogs held close and tied the game again 64-64 with 7:21 remaining.
  • Chris Molina drained a three from the top of the key with under 30 seconds to play to hand the lead back to the Pirates 80-78.
  • TLU hit two free throws on the other end, tying the game at 80 a piece with 11.3 ticks left. Southwestern was unable to get a shot off in the final seconds to send the game into overtime.
  • A four-point lead early in overtime was enough to keep Southwestern out of reach the rest of the way.

Southwestern falls to 3-9 on the year and 0-1 in the SCAC. They return home to face Austin College (10-1, 0-1) on Friday, January 8th at 6 p.m.
