Men’s Basketball Falls to Centenary

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Pirates shot fewer free throws than the Gents made as Southwestern fell 68-58 to Centenary College on Friday night.

It was a cautious start to the game as both teams were patient offensively. Centenary pull ahead slightly, but after a layup and made free throw by Chase Kocher the Pirates were back within two, 14-12, with 12 minutes to go in the first.

Kocher scored two more points from the free throw line with one second left in the half and brought SU within six, 32-26, after trailing by as any as 12.

Centenary retained the lead in the early   part of the first half, but SU continued to hang close and took the lead with just under 14 minutes remaining on Eric Garza's three-pointer.

The Gents took the lead on the next possession and never gave it back to the Pirates despite every effort by SU.

Southwestern shot well from the floor, going 43.2% from the field and 40% from three point range while Centenary had a lower shooting percentage, 41.2%, but made 22-32 from the free throw line. The Pirates were also outrebounded 42-22 in the loss.

Nicholas Atiee was the only Pirate in double figures with 12 points while CC's Jonathan Blount led all scorers with 16 points.

SU falls to 8-12 on the year and 4-6 in the SCAC while Centenary improves to 8-11 and 4-7. Southwestern remains at home to face Austin College on Saturday night at 8 pm.
