Tough Second Half Leads to Loss in Pirate Opener

ABILENE, Texas - In their season opener the Southwestern men's basketball team was out-scored 58-35 in the second half as they fell to Hardin-Simmons University 91-63 on Tuesday evening.

The Pirates got off to a slow start after their opening basket as HSU went on a 17-0 run to open the game. Southwestern regrouped and went on a run of their own, bringing the score even 19-19 with 7:42 to play in the first.

The teams battled back and forth as Southwestern went into the break down by five, 28-33.

Following halftime Hardin-Simmons was able to score nearly two baskets to every one of Southwestern's and built a lead that continued to expand until the final horn blew with the Cowboys on top for the 91-63 final. 

Sophomore Michael Cantu led the way for Southwestern with 17 points on 6-9 shooting from the field, 1-1 from three point range. Senior Logan Hurley posted a double-double in the game with 12 points and 11 boards.

Hardin-Simmons' Matt Addison led all scorers with 32 points.

Southwestern comes home for the first time this season for the Southwestern Classic Friday and Saturday. They face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Friday night at 8pm.
