PIRATES DOMINATE WARRIORS AT HOME

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern opened the game on a 17-2 run and never looked back as they defeated Hendrix College 88-68 in SCAC action on Friday night. The win improves SU to 4-9 on the year and 2-2 in the SCAC while Hendrix remains winless in the conference at 0-4, 4-8 overall.

Senior Nick Caputo got things started for the Pirates, draining a three from the top of the key in the opening possession of the game. Hendrix answered with a jumper on the ensuing possession and then Southwestern's defense got down to business and held the Warriors to without a field goal for the next seven minutes, allowing the Pirates to pull way ahead.

SU pushed the lead to 18 points after a jumper by Caputo with 30 seconds to play in the period but Hendrix cut it to 15, 44-29, after a three pointer by Jaren Riley closed the half. Jonathan Brown tallied 15 points in the period while Caputo added 11.

Caputo started the Pirates right where they left off at the outset of the second half with a jumper and a pair of free throws, as SU started the final frame on an 8-0 run to lead by 21. The Pirates pushed ahead by 24 with 15:37 remaining after a free throw by Robbie Hanley before Hendrix slowly crept back into the game.

With four and half minutes remaining in the contest the Warriors found themselves within 13 points. SU put together a short 7-0 run over the next two minutes to lead by 19 once again, 83-64, effectively dashing the hopes of a comeback by Hendrix.

Southwestern shot an impressive 52% from the floor and 47.1% from long range in the win while HC was held to just 36.2% from the field and 32.1% from three point. Another key to the Pirates' victory was a +13 rebounding margin for the game.

Brown and Caputo led for SU with 20 points each while Hanley added in 13 and Logan Hurley chipped in 12. Brown was also the leading rebounder for the Pirates with seven boards while first-year Michael Cantu (pictured) had a season high seven assists. HC's Riley led all scorers with 22 points.

Southwestern will look to continue to make moves in the SCAC as they host Millsaps College on Sunday at 2:00.
