PIRATES DEFEND HOME COURT AGAINST HENDRIX UPSET BID

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Junior Jonathan Brown's low post jumper gave Southwestern the lead with five ticks left on the clock and proved to be the game winner as the Pirates defeated Hendrix College 60-58 in SCAC action on Saturday night in the Robertson Center. SU improves to 16-6 on the year and 9-4 in the conference while Hendrix falls to 6-13 overall and 3-10 in the SCAC.

Southwestern came out strong, quickly mounting a six point lead five minutes in, but soon hit a cold spell going scoreless for nearly six minutes allowing Hendrix to go up by six points themselves, 17-23, with 7:33 left to play in the half.

Senior Collyn Kelley stopped the skid with a pair of three-pointers that gave SU a two point lead, 25-23, with just under five to play in the half. Hendrix responded with a pair of threes and a jumper by high scorer Nick Heathscott to push the lead to six once again, but junior Nick Caputo drained two from long range including one as the halftime buzzer sounded to send the teams into the locker room locked at 33.

Neither team was able to pull away as the second half wore on. Caputo hit his first of two free throws with 1:43 left to play to bring the game even 54-54, the sixth tie of the game and fourth of the half, and then drained the second as well to put SU up by one, 55-54.

Hendrix went back down low to Heathscott who scored his 20th point of the game on a highly contested baseline jumper to pull the Warriors back ahead by one, 55-56 with 1:23 on the clock. The Pirates came down the floor and patiently worked their offense and found Caputo coming off a screen, wide-open, who knocked down his fifth three of the game, putting Southwestern up by two 58-56 with just under a minute to play.

The Warriors quickly got the ball back in Heathscott's hand on the block and he made an aggressive move towards the hoop, missed the jumper, but drew a foul. His two free throws were off the mark, the only two he missed from the charity stripe all game, and gave Southwestern the opening they needed to secure the win when senior Zach Bergstrom was fouled on the defensive rebound.

Bergstrom missed the front end of a one-and-one and Hendrix's Ryan Rizos made a pull-up jumper to tie the game 58-58 with 15 ticks left on the clock. Southwestern came storming down the court in response and quickly found Brown posting hard on the right block. Brown faked right and pulled through left, making the jumper off the glass to give SU a two point lead 60-58 with five second remaining.

Hendrix's Rizos took the inbound the length of the court and got a decent look at the basket but was unable to convert on the game winner as his jumper bounced off the front then back of the rim and gave Southwestern the close victory.

Brown led for the Pirates with 20 points while Caputo added 19 and senior Travis Barber contributed 11. Heathscott led for Hendrix with 20 points.

The Pirates were out-rebounded 43-35 and made seven fewer free-throws (6-13) than Hendrix but made five more field goals on the evening, shooting 39.7% from the floor and 32% from beyond the arc.

Southwestern returns to the road for games at Colorado College and Austin College. They face Colorado on Friday night at 8:00 pm.
