PIRATES POUNCE ON TIGERS IN SCAC OPENER, WIN BY 22

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southwestern men’s basketball team opened their first SCAC conference game against conference rival Trinity with a 15-7 run to cruise to a 78-56 win to improve to 4-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference.

The Pirates steadily built on their strong start throughout the remainder of the first half shooting an astounding 70 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from the three point line. SU had three players in double figures, senior Zach Bergstrom, and juniors Nick Caputo and Jonathan Brown. Caputo couldn’t miss from long range going 4-4 in the first half which partially resulted in a 14 point halftime lead for Southwestern 45-31.

The second half was more of the same as Southwestern never relinquished its double digit lead and continued to exert their dominance over the Tigers through the second half, closing out the contest with a 22 point victory.

Shooting 61% from the floor and 58.8% from three point range was a huge part to the Pirates’ win, but SU’s strong defense held Trinity to just 33.3% from the field and 23.5% from beyond the arc on their home court.

Caputo led with 19 points going 7-9 from the field and 5-7 from three while Brown and Bergstrom each contributed 17 points. Trinity’s Caldarera had 15 points to lead the Tigers.

The Pirates will finally come home for the first time this season as they host non-conference school the University of Dallas on Sunday at 4:00 pm. SU will recognize their mentees from Annie Purl Elementary School prior to the start of the game.
