POOR SHOOTING LEADS TO PIRATES' FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS

POOR SHOOTING LEADS TO PIRATES' FIRST CONFERENCE LOSS

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern shot just 23.6% from the floor and 23.8% from beyond the arc on Saturday afternoon and narrowly dropped their first SCAC game of the year 52-47 to Colorado College.

Both squads came out of the gates tight as Southwestern used a late run to finally take the lead and head into halftime up by one, 25-24, despite shooting under 30% from the field and three point line.

The second half was much of the same as SU struggled to find their rhythm. After the fourth tie of the game, 28-28, with 16 and a half to play the Tigers took the lead and never relinquished it for the remainder of the contest.

Colorado led by eight, 34-42, just over halfway through the period and the Pirates went on a 5-0 to pull within three points, 39-42 with a little over seven minutes remaining. A layup by Colorado College high scorer Nick Rose snapped SU’s streak and pushed the Tiger lead back to five.

Southwestern was able to pull as close as three after junior Jonathan Brown’s layup with 20 seconds left, but the Tigers sank their free throws down the stretch to take the 52-47 victory.

The Pirates out-rebounded Colorado 38-34 and had two fewer turnovers but could not overcome a tough shooting night.

Southwestern now sits at 8-3 overall and 1-1 in SCAC conference action while Colorado remains unbeaten in the SCAC with a 3-0 record and are 7-3 overall.

The ‘Roos of Austin College will come into Georgetown on Sunday at 3:00 to take on Southwestern in continued conference action.
