Southwestern Adds Four New Assistant Coaches to Athletics Staff

The SU athletic department will feature four new faces as assistant coaches for baseball, softball, women's basketball and women's soccer have all been hired for the 2008-2009 school year.

Kyle Shipp has been hired as the new Assistant Baseball Coach and Outdoor Facilities Coordinator. Shipp, a 2007 graduate of the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, spent the 2008 season as a volunteer assistant coach for the Pirates. He was a four-year starter as a catcher for the Crusaders and was a three-time Academic All-Conference selection. In 2006, he received the American Southwest Conference Fred Jacoby Male Sportsmanship Award.

Robin Becker, a 2008 graduate of St. Edward's University, will join the Pirates as the assistant coach for the first ever Southwestern softball team. She played on a Hilltopper team that placed third at the NCAA Division II World Series in 2008 and was an All-Conference pitcher. In addition to her role as assistant softball coach, Becker will serve as the assistant cross country coach in the fall.

Julie Wilke will step in as Assistant Women's Basketball Coach and Assistant Track & Field Coach after serving in a volunteer assistant role during the 2007-2008 season. She has worked in the private sector in Austin as a project manager for NuStats since 2006. From 2003 until 2004, Wilke served as the Girls Basketball Coach at Durand Junior High School in Durand, IL. A 2002 graduate of Beloit College, Wilke was a three-time All-Conference selection and is currently fifth in school history in points scored. She also earned a Master of Science in Community and Regional Planning from the University of Texas in 2006.

Amanda Garrison rounds out the new coaches as the Assistant Women's Soccer and Assistant Tennis Coach. Garrison played collegiately at Rice University, graduating in 2006, and was a Second Team All-WAC selection in 2001. Since 2002, she has worked as a goalkeeper coach/trainer for multiple camps and from 2005-2006 she was the Head Sports Camp Counselor at the Downtown Club in Houston, TX. From 2006 until 2008, Garrison has worked with kids as a ski instructor for the Aspen Ski Company.

All four coaches will officially begin their duties at Southwestern in August.
