WALLACE AND GOLA NAMED TO SCAC ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

April 29, 2009

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The 2009 SCAC All-Tournament team was released by the conference office and Southwestern University had two players named in the report, Blair Wallace and Katelyn Gola, including a unanimous selection of Wallace. Wallace was one of two individuals to earn the unanimous selection by SCAC  coaches.

Blair Wallace, a first-year outfielder, led the Pirates over the weekend – hitting .500 while going 5-for-10 from the plate with one run scored. An Abilene, Texas native, she finished the weekend with a .600 slugging percentage while posting a .545 on-base percentage.

Gola, a junior transfer from Howard Payne University, was 3-11 from the plate for a .273 batting average with one double, one RBI and two stolen bases at the tournament. Gola had three putouts and nine assists while committing no errors over the weekend.

Megan Soultz of DePauw, the all-America pitcher of the 19th-ranked team, joined Wallace in the unanimous voting. Soutz led DePauw University to the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Championship after defeating Rhodes College, 8-0, in the conference championship game. It was the second straight SCAC softball title for the DU Tigers.

In the championship game, Soultz allowed just one hit in recording her 13th shutout of the season. Soultz went 3-0 during the tournament, striking out 15 batters while posting an ERA of 0.00. Batters who faced Soultz hit just .194 against the junior right-hander in 19.0 innings of work as she gave up just three walks all weekend. A native of Carmel, Ind., Soultz improved to 23-7 for the year while making her second straight appearance on the SCAC all-tournament softball team.

By being selected to this year’s squad, DePauw’s Rachel Gill becomes just the seventh player in league history to be named to three SCAC all-tournament teams. Gill hit .444 (4-for-9) from the plate – driving in two runs whiles scoring two of her own. The senior catcher was perfect defensively on the weekend (18-for-18) with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Gill joins joins Maggie Blackburn of Centre (05, 07-08), Robin Rockco of Millsaps (02-04), Amy Owensby of Sewanee (02-04) and Shannon George (99-00, 02), Kyle Schumacher (99-01) and Erin Mulvey (05-07) – all of Trinity – as the only three-time SCAC all-tournament members.

Another noteworthy individual effort came from Millsaps College’s Kasey Thibodeaux, a repeat member of the team from a year ago. Thibodeaux hit .333 (2-for-6) for the week while posting an on-base percentage of .429.

DePauw led the way with five selections to the 2009 SCAC All-Tournament Team while Hendrix College, Rhodes College and Southwestern all had two honorees. Millsaps and Rhodes both had one selection.
