SAN ANTONIO, Texas – The Southwestern University Pirates softball team showed promise in their 8-3 win against Trinity in their first match in a three-game series.

In the top of the first inning, Kaitlynn Copher singled through the left side of the field earning one RBI and allowing Sydney Scot to score the first run of the game. The Pirates defense held the Tigers to no runs while Katelyn Francis and Andrea Hern were handed walks from Tiger pitcher Allie Holbrook. The walks let both earn an RBI and put the Pirates three runs ahead of the Tigers.

The Tigers switched pitchers but could not stop the Pirates from reaching the bases. In the top of the fourth inning Maddie Mefford singled to left field to gain two RBI's as Jordan Farber and Scott each scored a run.

Once again in the fourth, Jessey Nunez was walked by Tiger pitcher Marisa Mejia, giving Nunez one RBI. With two outs left in the inning, Sam Martinez singled to left field and earned two RBI's with Montemayor and Mefford scoring two more runs. This left the game at 8-0.

The Tigers had a short streak in the bottom of the fourth, earning three runs. But Pirate pitcher Lindsey Longuet ended their streak and helped hold the Tigers from scoring any more runs in the game, guaranteeing a Pirate win.

Head Coach Emerald Doria says "We did a great job staying patient at the plate. We had a tough zone at the plate and we did well capitalizing when we could. We will celebrate the win tonight and get back to work tomorrow."

Southwestern's record improves 8-3 and is now 1-0 in SCAC conference play. The Pirates will continue their series against the Trinity Tigers tomorrow Saturday, March 1 at noon and 2 p.m.
