Softball Crushes Crusaders
GEORGETOWN, Texas – Southwestern dominated the University of Dallas in Saturday's doubleheader. The Pirates outscored the Crusaders 11-0 and 16-0 in the pair of 5 inning games.
The offense was held scoreless for the opening two innings, but exploded for 8 runs in the 3rd. Linsay Biggers and Abigail O'Connor jump-started the onslaught with a pair of singles. Then Karen Ramirez loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch. A wild pitch allowed Biggers to score the first run for the Pirates and the floodgates opened. The rally was highlighted by a 2 RBI single through the left side by Kayla Irvin and a RBI double to right center by Jessica Bryant.
In the bottom of the 4th, Southwestern continued to add runs to the scoreboard. Ramirez led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch. A batter later, Tessa Galloway laid down a well-placed bunt for a RBI single. Then Irvin reached on a fielder's choice and Victoria Vasquez brought home Galloway with a double to left field. After Bryant was hit by a pitch, Christina Crandall entered the game and hit a RBI single to put the Bucs up 11-0.
The Pirates held the Crusaders scoreless in the 5th to secure the win in game one. The team displayed a balanced offense, getting hits from 10 different players in the first leg of the doubleheader. Kelsey Kingston allowed 3 hits and struck out 8 batters in 4 innings of work to earn the win.

The bats stayed hot for Southwestern in game two of the afternoon. Ramirez led off the bottom of the 1st with a single to left field and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ashleigh Scott. Galloway brought her in with a double to left center. The Pirates proceeded to load the bases just in time for Michelle Ramos to crush a grand slam well over the wall in left field to open up a 5-0 lead.
More runs would come in the 2nd inning for SU. O'Connor and Ramirez hit a pair of doubles for the first run in the frame. Then Scott belted a 2 run homer to put the team up 8-0.
The Pirates doubled up their run total in the bottom of the 3rd. They scored 8 more runs on 5 hits and benefitted from 3 errors by UD to help put the game out of reach 16-0.
Again, the Southwestern offense was firing on all cylinders. 5 batters had multi-hit games and runs were scored by 12 different players. Kingston picked up another win as Southwestern moves to 22-8 on the year and 5-1 in conference.
The series continues tomorrow as the teams have another doubleheader starting at 12:00pm.
