Seven Pirates Named as All-SCAC Selections

SUWANEE, Ga. - Seven Southwestern softball student-athletes were named in the 2012 All-SCAC Softball Teams announced Friday night at the SCAC Conference Tournament, the most so far by the young program. Senior outfielder Taylor Turpin led the way as an All-SCAC First Team pick while senior shortstop Amanda Ambrose, first-year third baseman Ashleigh Scott and senior pitcher Lyndsy Maus were All-SCAC Second Team selections.

Turpin ended the season 12th in the SCAC in runs scored, 6th overall in conference games, and 5th in hits. She was third on the team with a .350 batting average and first in runs scored with 27. In 117 at bats she posted 41 hits and had an on base percentage of .392, second on the team. Turpin had 26 putouts and two assists this season with no errors for a 1.000 fielding percentage. Turpin was a Second Team All-SCAC selection last season and Honorable Mention pick in 2009 and 2010.

This is Amanda Ambrose's first All-SCAC team selection and is much deserved after her outstanding senior season. Ambrose was second in runs scored with 23 and also drove in 23 runs, third best on the team. She posted a .320 batting average, recording 41 hits on 128 at bats. Her nine doubles ranks her second on the team and tied for eighth in the conference. In conference action Ambrose posted 21 hits which is tied for fifth best in the conference.

Ashleigh Scott stepped onto the field with the confidence of a seasoned veteran and was awarded with a Second Team All-SCAC pick. Scott was fifth on the team with 18 RBIs and fifth in doubles with six. He recorded 35 hits in 117 at bats for a .299 batting average. On the field Scott led the team in assists with 100 and had 44 put outs with just eight errors all season for a .947 fielding percentage.

Senior pitcher Lyndsy Maus makes her second appearance on the Second Team All-SCAC list, earning a spot in 2010. She was also an Honorable Mention pick in 2011. This season Maus took on the bulk of the duties in the circle towards the end of the season. She ended the year with a 3.28 ERA while holding opponents to a .249 batting average. In conference play she led the SCAC in innings pitched with 75.1 and had a 2.14 ERA, eighth best in the conference. She struck out 45 conference batters while walking just 10 in 16 games, 15 complete.

Tessa Galloway, Haley Hughes and Kaitlyn Pavlicek were all named to the Honorable Mention team this season. Galloway was second on the team in batting average (.358) and slugging percentage (.545) while taking top honors in on-base percentage (.408) thanks in large part to her team high 10 doubles and second highest home runs (5). Hughes was dominate at the plate and is tops in batting average (.365), slugging percentage (.569), hits (50), RBIs (35) and homeruns (8). Pavlicek embodied the utility position, playing outfield, designated player and pitcher at different points throughout the season. She was top five in every offensive category for the Pirates this season and also posted a 3.12 ERA in 17 appearances in the circle this season.

Southwestern closed out the season with a 26-18 overall record, 12-5 in the SCAC. They fell out of the conference tournament after their second loss to eventual champion Birmingham-Southern, one game away from the Championship game. Four seniors, Turpin, Ambrose, Maus, and Pavlicek, all ended their careers at Southwestern with the loss and are the first class to compete all four years at Southwestern since the softball program's inception in 2009.
