Softball Splits Final Day of Regular Season

Softball Splits Final Day of Regular Season

Southwestern University closed up the regular season with a split, 7-0 & 4-6, with Millsaps on Sunday afternoon. Southwestern sits at 27-13 on the year and 13-3 in the conference, finishing in first place in the West.

Slow and steady was the name of the game through the opening innings of game one. Southwestern struck first scoring one run in the bottom of the first off of Kaitlyn Pavlicek's (pictured) double.

Karen Ramirez drove in another run in the third inning, pushing the Pirates up by two, 2-0.

After a quiet fourth and fifth Southwestern hit their stride, posting five runs in the sixth inning thanks in large part to Pavlicek's three run blast.

Southwestern's defense remained strong as they closed out the game and gave Lauren Zearfoss her 16th win. She allowed just one hit on the afternoon and no runs, striking out six and walking none.

Pavlicek exhibited pure domination at the plate with a 4 RBI, 4-4 performance in the game.

In game two the Majors made their mark early with two runs to open the game and added two more in the fourth before the Pirates jumped in.

Southwestern pushed on across in the fourth but Millsaps responded with two additional runs in the sixth, making the count 6-1. The Pirates refused to go down without a fight, however, and put of three of their own in the sixth to make the count 6-4.

Lyndsy Maus garnered the loss, allowing six runs on 12 hits with no walks and striking out four.

Kayla Irvin went 3-4 at the plate with two runs scored and one RBI. Karen Ramirez also had a solid outing with a 2-2 performance and one run scored.

The Pirates advance to the post-season as the #1 seed in the West at next weekend's SCAC Conference Tournament held in Greencastle, IN.
