Pirates’ Bats Ignite Against Crusaders

The SU softball team scored 31 runs and held the University of Dallas scoreless in their home double header on Saturday afternoon, exploding for a 16-0 win in game one and 15-0 win in game two. The wins improve the Pirates to 18-10 on the year while UD falls to 4-18.

Southwestern was the first to threaten in game one, getting a runner in scoring position when Hayley Hughes singled up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a passed ball. Karen Ramirez's (pictured) single up the middle brought in the first run of the game for the Pirates. After two walks loaded the based Amanda Ambrose drove in another run with a chopper back to the pitcher that allowed Ramirez to score, putting SU up 2-0 after two.

Kayla Irvin opened the fourth with a double to left field and sparked a 14-run fourth and put Southwestern in position to only play solid defense in the top of the 5th to seal with win. Starting pitcher Lyndsy Maus continued to throw well on the mound and notched the one-hitter as the Pirates allowed just two baserunners. Maus allowed no runs on one hit while walking none and striking out seven to earn her eighth win of the year.

Karen Ramirez posted a perfect game at the plate, going 3-3 with two RBI's and three runs scored to lead the way for Southwestern in game one. Hughes also posted a three hit game, going 3-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.

The Pirates scored in the second inning again in the second game on a triple to right field by Tessa Galloway that brought in pinch runner Kimmy Lurati. That triple started another scoring spree for the Pirates as they pushed ten runs across in the inning to lead 10-0 after two.

UD loaded the bases in the top of the third with two outs, threatening to pull closer but Ramirez charged the chopper up the middle with two outs and delivered the throw to first just in time to keep the shutout intact.

Southwestern added four more runs in the third thanks in part to a three-run bomb by Irvin just right of the scoreboard that cleared the fence by six feet. One more run in the fourth and then tough defense in the fifth gave the Pirates the 15-0 win.
Lauren Zearfoss earned the complete game win, allowing just one hit and no runs while walking four and striking out 10.
Taylor Turpin led at the plate going 3-4 in game two with two runs scored while Irvin drove in four runs.
The Pirates return to conference action next weekend as they host conference-rival Trinity for a four game series starting on Saturday at 1pm.
