Tornados Sneak Out Split On Pirates

Tornados Sneak Out Split On Pirates

GEORGETOWN, Texas - Southwestern used a three run inning to win game one 3-0 but fell in 10 innings in the night cap 4-3 against Concordia University on Saturday afternoon. The split puts the Pirates at 4-6 on the year while CUA moves to 5-3.

Concordia came out ready to play and loaded the bases with one out on starting pitcher Lyndsy Maus (pictured) in game one but Maus got out of the jam unscathed by retiring the next two batters. The Tornados got a runner to third base again in the third but then were shut out for the remainder of the game as Maus continued to improve with each passing inning.

She got the run support she needed in the fifth inning when Tessa Galloway led off with a single. Amanda Ambrose and Taylor Turpin both reached as well and thanks to a couple of Tornado errors the Pirates scored more than enough runs to win 3-0.

Maus earned the win on the complete game shutout, her first of the season, improving to 1-3 on the year, scattering six hits, striking out six and walking none. CUA's Moreno garnered the loss to fall to 2-2, allowing six hits, three runs, one earned and striking out just one.

Haley Hughes was the only Pirate with a multi-hit game in game one going 2-3 from the place while Jacquelin Rosson had an RBI.

It was a pitcher's dual in game two as neither team could push a run across the plate through regulation despite the Pirates having their opportunities in the third and sixth.

Concordia struck first in the top of the eighth with a lead off single from Recek that was followed by well executed bunt singles scoring the first run of the game. Southwestern, with their backs against the wall, pressed forward to extend the game further. Taylor Turpin's one-out single started the rally and was advanced to second on Rosson's hard grounder to third base. Kayla Irvin drove in the game-tying run by going with the pitch on the outside corner and poking the ball to into right field, driving Turpin home.

After a strong top of the ninth defensively for SU Kaylee Kucharski led off the bottom half of the inning with a single and got all the way to third before Concordia escaped the jam once again.

With the international tie breaker in effect Concordia scored three runs on two hits and one error in the top half of the inning, putting the Pirates in a precarious situation coming to the plate.

Ambrose started off at second and advanced to third on a single by Turpin to right field. Turpin stole second and then Rosson was hit to load the bases with no outs. Two quick pop ups by Southwestern put the game on the line for Katelyn Pavlicek. Pavlicek singled and drove in two runs, closing the gap to one, 4-3. Kucharski was unable to beat out her hard hit grounder to short as the Pirates' comeback push fell short.

Despite throwing extremely well throughout the contest Lauren Zearfoss garnered the loss after going 10 innings, allowing four runs on nine hits while walking one and striking out 10. CUA's Teylor Schiefelbein went the distance to earn the win.

Turpin led the way at the plate going 3-5 with two runs scored while Irvin, Pavlicek and Kucharski all recorded two hits.

The Pirates remain at home and have revenge on their minds as they face Texas Lutheran University for a double header on Sunday beginning at 1. The two teams met in Seguin earlier in the season with TLU winning both including a no-hitter in game one.
