GOLA AND HUGHES RECEIVE ALL-REGION HONORS

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced All-Region selections on Friday and Southwestern University's Katelyn Gola and Haley Hughes were named as Third Team All-West Region.

Gola (pictured, left), plays third base for the Pirates and has taken care of business both in the field and at the plate. She is currently ninth in career fielding in the NCAA record books with 286 career assists. She is 17 assists away from overtaking eighth place (Janet Both, DeSales, 303). She has 105 assists this season and 65 put outs with just 13 errors on the year.

At the plate, Gola is second on the team with a .348 batting average, amassing 48 hits in 138 at bats. She has scored a team high 36 runs and is second in doubles with 14.

Hughes (pictured, right) leads the Pirates in every offensive category despite this being her first-year playing collegiate softball. She has posted a .404 batting average with 57 hits in 141 at bats, blasted 19 doubles, two triples and five homeruns while driving in 46 runs; all of which are team highs. Hughes is also second on the team in runs scored with 34.

Southwestern has had a phenominal year, posting a 31-11 record and winning their first SCAC Title. They will begin NCAA Tournament action on Friday as they face the University of Texas Tyler in the first round of Regional action at 2:00 pm in Pineville, LA.
