PIRATES FACE CENTRE IN FIRST ROUND OF SCAC TOURNAMENT; EARN FIRST REGIONAL RANKING

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern softball team has earned a spot in the SCAC Tournament for the second year in a row and their first ever regional ranking. The Pirates currently sit in the #7 spot in the region, just outside of the crucial top five and is the #2 seed in the West. SU will play the first game of the tournament, Friday at noon, against Centre College.

Southwestern, at 25-10 on the year and 10-4 in the SCAC, comes in at the #2 seed and face #3 East seed Centre, 16-24 overall and 4-11 in conference action. The two teams have never faced one another.

The Tigers are averaging 5.2 runs and 7.6 hits per game this season, lead by Elizabeth Fenwick who is hitting .391 on the season with 36 hits at 92 at bats and is tied for first on the team in runs batted in with 24. SU is averaging 8.7 hits and 5.8 runs per game and are led at the plate by first-baseman Haley Hughes. Hughes is hitting an astounding .419 this season with 49 hits in 117 at bats and leads the team in doubles (16), homeruns (4) and RBI's (36).

On the mound Southwestern has a deep pitching staff that has kept teams off balance all season. First-year Kara Solomon has settled into the starting role with ease, working to an 8-3 record with a 2.49 earned run average and holding teams to .217 from the plate. Lyndsy Maus has been solid all year working to a 13-4 record. She has a 2.03 ERA and is holding teams to a .232 batting average, striking out 79 batters this season and walking just 15. Kaitlyn Pavlicek provides great relief for the Pirates and keeps teams guessing, holding teams to .242 from the plate. 

Centre also has a deep pitching staff with a 3.84 ERA and holding teams to a .273 batting average. They have three main pitchers but also have two in their pocket that they have turned to in times of need this season. Charlotte Jones leads the way with a 3.59 ERA and relies on her defense to do most of the work, accumulating just 39 strikeouts on the year.

Southwestern is 7-0 in neutral site games this year and 8-4 on the road which bodes well for travel this weekend. Centre has struggled away from home going just 2-9 for away games and 0-3 at neutral sites.
