PIRATES LOCK UP SECOND PLACE WITH PAIR OF WINS AT TRINITY

PIRATES LOCK UP SECOND PLACE WITH PAIR OF WINS AT TRINITY

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Southwestern's softball team was able to squeeze in two of the four games this weekend at Trinity, winning 1-0 and 4-2 to lock up the #2 seed in the West at the SCAC Championships. The Pirates are now 25-10 overall and 10-4 in the conference heading into postseason action.

Southwestern scored just one run in the first game and managed to hang on to the lead despite committing four errors throughout the contest. Bre Lewis opened up the third inning with a single down the left field line, advanced to second on Amanda Ambrose's sacrifice bunt and reached third on a wild pitch. With two outs Blair Wallace put the ball into play and Trinity misplayed her hit, allowing Lewis to score what proved to be the game winner.

The Pirates wouldn't allow a nail biter in the second game as they wasted no time posting runs on the board. They scored two in the top of the first and another in the second to take a 3-1 lead. Three runs was all they would need for the victory but SU added one more in the fourth for good measure to take the 4-2 victory.

Kara Solomon earned the shutout win in game one, allowing five hits while walking two and striking out three. Lyndsy Maus got the win in game two, allowing two runs (one earned) on eight hits while walking one and striking out four.

Taylor Turpin had a fantastic game at the plate in game two, going 3-3 and scoring twice and stealing two bases.

The wins advance the Pirates to the SCAC Conference Tournament for the second straight year. This year they enter as the number two seed in the west and face the #3 east seed, Centre College. The two teams face off in game one of the tournament, playing April 23rd at noon and the winner will advance to play #1 East seed DePauw.
