HENDRIX NO MATCH FOR PIRATES AT HOME

GEORGETOWN, Texas - The Southwestern Pirates scored first in both game on Friday afternoon as they defeated Hendrix 11-2 and 3-1 at Taylor Sanders Field. With the wins SU improves to 18-9 overall and 6-4 in the SCAC while Hendrix falls to 14-10 on the year and 3-4 in the conference.

Southwestern was first on the board with Aly Pulver’s line drive to centerfield was dropped, landing her at second and Blair Wallace switched places with her bringing in the first Pirate run. Another misplayed pop up and a single up the middle brought in two more runs with nobody out.

The Warriors were able to secure two outs but SU wasn’t done scoring as Bre Lewis drilled a double down the left field line to drive in two, Pulver singled to centerfield bringing in one Wallace followed with a monster shot over the fence in dead centerfield for three runs and Haley Hughes sent one over the left field fence for two more runs. After all was said and done the Pirates were up by 11 after just one inning of play.

Starting pitcher Kara Solomon kept the Warriors in check at the plate, striking out the first three hitters and then forcing two pop-outs in the second inning before Hendrix got their first baserunner with a single by Byler. Solomon got the last batter to strike out to retain the 11-0 lead.

Byler got the Warriors on the board with a two-out, two run homerun over the centerfield fence in the fourth, cutting SU’s lead to nine, 11-2. The Pirates closed out the contest early, taking the run rule win in game one.

Southwestern was first on the board once again, but only posted one run this time, in the second. Hendrix responded with a run of their own after a Pirate error, tying the game 1-1 after two and a half innings.

After posting two runs in the bottom of the fourth the Pirates returned to the field and Hendrix threatened, putting runners on second and third with just one out. Southwestern worked their way out of the bind as Solomon forced a pop fly to shallow centerfield and then got the next batter to pop out to O’Connor in foul territory for the final out, ending the threat.

The game ended with the Pirates in the field on a well-executed double play, giving Southwestern the 3-1 victory.

Blair Wallace was a perfect 3-3 in game one with four RBI's and two runs scored while Solomon made her only at bat a big one in game two as her hit to right field drove in what proved to be the winning runs.

The two teams close out their series on Saturday beginning at noon with a recognition of SU's only senior, Katelyn Gola.
