TURPIN'S GAME WINNER BLASTS PIRATES PAST CENTRAL IN EXTRA INNINGS

LONGVIEW, Texas - Taylor Turpin delivered a game-winning double in the bottom of the eighth inning, driving in pinch-runner Bre Lewis, to defeat nationally-ranked Central College (IA) on Saturday at the LeTourneau Classic.

The Pirates struck first, scoring three runs in the bottom of the second inning, and Central closed the gap pushing two of their own across the plate in the top of the third. The Dutch tied the game in the fifth inning, making the game 3-3 heading into the final stretch.

Southwestern had their chances to pull away a couple of times in regulation, but baserunning errors kept the game tied and forced the extra frame.

Lyndsy Maus got Davis to flyout to Pulver at second base and then struck out Everingham for the second out of the inning. Tenboer singled to centerfield, but the threat would end quickly as Maus struck Koskamp out looking.

Hughes started the bottom of the eighth off with a single to centerfield and Lewis came in to pinch run to set up the winning run. Maus reached on an error by the pitcher on her sacrifice bunt, pushing Lewis into scoring position. Jessica Johnson popped out to the pitcher who then picked off Maus at first for the double play, leaving Lewis alone at second base with two outs. Turpin's two-out double to bring in Lewis was all the Pirates needed for the 4-3 win.

Southwestern improves to 5-4 on the season with the win and return home to play host to Texas Lutheran University on March 9th beginning at 1:00 pm.
