Southwestern Hires Avery Murphy as Head Women’s Lacrosse Coach

GEORGETOWN, TEXAS - The Southwestern University Pirates Athletic Department has found its next women's lacrosse head coach, hiring Avery Murphy from the coaching staff of DIII King's College.

Murphy comes to Southwestern after serving as an assistant coach for the King's College Monarchs, where she also earned her master's degree in healthcare administration. Before her stint at King's College, Murphy was the assistant women's lacrosse coach at fellow Middle Atlantic Conference member Alvernia university from 2019 to 2021.

"We are thrilled Avery is joining us at Southwestern. After a highly decorated playing career and several impressive years in the coaching ranks, she is well-prepared to lead our program. As the only varsity collegiate program in the state of Texas, we occupy a unique niche in the sport, and we are looking forward to watching the program prosper under Coach Murphy," says Ken Ralph, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Murphy graduated in 2019 from DIII Cabrini University with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications. Murphy was a standout player in her time at Cabrini, holding numerous season and career records for the Cavaliers, including the career record for draw controls (452), single-season draw controls (206), career goals (238), single-season goals (95) and most points in a single season (124). Her success on the field earned her three consecutive conference player-of-the-year awards while helping the Cavaliers to three straight conference titles and two NCAA tournament appearances.

"I am proud to be named the next head women's lacrosse coach at Southwestern University. I hope to bring my passion for lacrosse and my experiences both as a player and a coach to the program. I want to thank Ken Ralph and Glenn Schwab for their support and enthusiasm during this process. I plan to build on the current achievements that the team has accomplished, and I look forward to becoming a part of the Southwestern team", says Murphy.

Murphy will be the fourth head coach since the women's lacrosse program began in 2014. The program has compiled a 65-61 record in its nine-year history, and Murphy inherits a team that won a program-record thirteen games in 2022 with only three losses.
