Women’s Lacrosse Prevails Over the Calvin Knights

Women’s Lacrosse Prevails Over the Calvin Knights

The Pirates' were met with stiff resistance throughout the competition but consistent production offensively and defensively helped them navigate to a win and move to 2-0 on the season.

It took a while for both teams to find their groove in this game and the early season jitters were evident in both the Pirates' and the Knights'. The Knights' had eight turnovers in the first quarter while the Pirates had five turnovers themselves. The first goal of the quarter didn't come until the 6 ½ minute mark when Natasha Perez-Krause opened up the scoring for both teams. Raquel Kurth and Raven Garcia followed the lead of Perez-Krause bringing the quarter to an end at 3-2.

Four different women scored in the second quarter including Liana Collins and Emma Pertuit. But the Knights' were never discouraged, they scored three consecutive goals in under two minutes to tie the game at 5-5 halfway through the second quarter. Despite an uncharacteristic nine turnovers, the Pirates' offense was still able to produce goals and the half ended with a 7-5 Pirates' lead.

It was all Pirates' in the third, four goals extended their lead to five at the end of the quarter. Although the Pirates' lost the turnover margin, they excelled in ground balls and the clearing game. This effort allowed them to regain and maintain valuable possessions and set up their settled offense. Brooke Folliard, Raquel Kurth and Emma Pertuit had three ground balls apiece while Kate Vlasek, Sierra Rupp, Caden Laflamme-Szakonyi and Deanna Hames each had two.

The Pirates' were able to match their counterparts in the final quarter maintaining their five goal lead in a 14-9 victory. It's hard to defeat a team that shoots as well as the Pirates', who ended the night with almost a 50 percent shooting percentage. Natasha Perez-Krause played a huge role in this game as did Raven Garcia. Perez-Krause concluded with four goals and one assist while Garcia attained six points via a balanced three goals and three assists.

The Pirates' take on the Ohio Northern Polar Bears at home next Tuesday, March 8th at 7:00 PM.
