Women’s Lacrosse End’s Historic Regular Season 13-2

Women’s Lacrosse End’s Historic Regular Season 13-2

The Southwestern Women's Lacrosse team will finish their historic regular season with thirteen total wins and only two losses. Southwestern ended their regular season on a 1-1 road trip to Wisconsin and Minnesota.

In the Pirates' first of their last two games, they took on the University of Wisconsin-River Falls Falcons, a team that had received votes for being ranked in the top 25 in Division III earlier in March. The game proved to be a difficult matchup for the Pirates as the Falcons were able to shut down the ordinarily dynamic Pirate offense.

The Falcons scored thirteen goals against the Pirates in the first half while only allowing two goals to Southwestern. The Pirates were only able to score one goal in each first and second quarter, thanks to Raven Garcia and Emma Pertuit. The Falcons maintained possessions throughout the entirety of the first half once they got the ball and converted on the majority of their chances.

The second half was much of the same for the Falcons. In the third quarter, River Falls put up another four goals while only allowing the Pirates one scoring play. Raquel Kurth converted in the final seconds of the third for the Pirates to end the quarter at 17-3, Falcons lead.

The Pirates revived some of their offense capabilities in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Falcons by four goals to two. Even with four different Pirates scoring in the fourth, it wouldn't make a difference with the massive lead the Falcons created. The Falcons cruised to a 19-7 victory over Southwestern.

The Pirates fared far better in their matchup against the Augsburg University Auggies. The Pirates meant business in the first quarter, putting up ten goals against the Auggies while only allowing them one. While the Pirates built a massive lead to start the game, the second quarter was contested by the Auggies, with three goals coming from the Pirates and two from Augsburg. The first half ended at 13-3 in favor of the Pirates. Raven Garcia had four goals in the first quarter alone, Raquel Kurth had two, and numerous others added to the first-quarter total. DeAnna Hames had three goals for the Pirates' dominant lead by the end of the first half.

The Pirate defense shut out the Auggies in the third quarter, with the Auggies turning the ball over five times and only managing one shot. In the third quarter, five different Pirates scored, including Jr. attacker Brynne Hardway, who had four points on two goals and two assists during the game. To close out the fourth quarter, Garcia ended with another goal for five goals for the contest. Kurth followed her up for four points on three goals and one assist, and Hames would tie Garcia in points with three goals and two assists. The Pirates had no issues with the Auggies, with the final score ending in a dominant 20-4 fashion.

The Pirates' next competition will be in the SCAC Conference Tournament, with the semifinal game taking place on Saturday, April 30th. The Conference Championship game will take place the following day, Sunday, May 1st.
