Winter, Maynard Pace Pirates Past Berry

CONWAY, Ark. - Junior Ronni Winter and sophomore Grace Maynard each scored five goals while Southwestern had a huge 11-goal first half as they bounced back at Warrior Turf Field for a 15-9 win over Berry College on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates outshot the Vikings 30-19, including 17-6 in the first half, and forced Berry into 23 turnovers while Southwestern had a season-low 14. The Pirates won 14 of 21 draw controls despite only picking up 16 ground balls in the entire contest.

The Vikings got on the board first, but that set off a string of nine straight goals by the Pirates as they completely dominated the rest of the half. Winter scored three goals during the run while Maynard and sophomore Johnee Wolter each added two.

Berry got a goal to cut the deficit to 9-2, but back-to-back goals by Winter in the final two minutes capped off a five goal half for the junior from Cedar Park and an 11-2 lead for the Pirates at half.

The Southwestern scoring slowed down in the second half, but the Pirates continued to do a good job holding the Berry attack in check. The Vikings got as close as five, but Southwestern closed the game out with a pair of goals from Maynard in the final five minutes for the 15-9 win.

For Winter, the five goals matched a career-high, while Maynard set a new career-mark. Both had assists in the contest as well. Wolter finished with two goals and an assist while senior Brenna Jobb, junior Madison Godleski, and junior Hayley Donnelly all added a goal. Donnelly had two assists as well.

Defensively, senior Allison Cook conitnues her outstanding play, finishing with three caused turnovers, five ground balls, four draw controls, and an assist. Sophomore Claire Harding got the start in goal and earned the win, finishing with five saves in the contest.

Southwestern moves to 2-3 overall and will return to action on Tuesday night as they welcome in Aurora at 6 PM.
