Box Score

Despite shooting just 34.7% from the field for the game and 9.1% beyond the arc, Southwestern defeated the Sewanee Tigers 43-31 on Saturday night.

The Pirates used tough defense to seal the victory. SU jumped out to a 10-0 lead to start the game and held Sewanee scoreless until nearly 7 minutes into the first half. Southwestern went into halftime up 6, 15-9.

At the start of the second half, the Tigers tried to claw their way back into the game and eventually took the lead, 19-20, with just under 17 minutes left to go. The lead would not last long, though, as Southwestern responded with a 17-2 run over the next 9 minutes to go up by 14, 36-22.

The Pirates held the Tigers to just 20.3% from the floor and 12.5% from beyond the arc. Only two Sewanee players scored double digit points on the night. Southwestern recorded 10 steals including 3 from senior forward Natasha Azizi.

Azizi was one of the four Pirates to score during the night. She led with 15 points on 5-14 shooting. Sophomore guard Jennifer Tindle and junior guard Jessica Herbst followed with 12 and 11 points respectively. Sophomore center Staley Mullins was the only other Pirate to score and she chipped in 5 points, but also had a team high 9 rebounds.

The win improves the Pirates to 5-13 overall and 1-7 in SCAC play. They return to action on the road as they take on Centre on Friday night at 8:00 pm and DePauw on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
