ALPINE, Texas — A tepid shooting performance turned downright frigid in the third quarter for the Southwestern women's basketball team in a 59-43 loss to the Sul Ross State Lobos.

Southwestern trailed by only three at halftime, but Sul Ross State locked in defensively to outscore the Pirates 14-5 in the third quarter to break the game open. The Pirates turned the ball over on four of their first five possessions in the second half, committing eight in the quarter while shooting just 2-for-16 from the field and missing all five 3-pointers.

Sul Ross State held Southwestern at bay in the fourth quarter with continued relentlessness on defense, forcing seven turnovers, of which six were steals. Southwestern finished with 24 turnovers to 10 for Sul Ross State, who struggled to capitalize on them, scoring only 10 points off turnovers.

Mia Paz led the Pirates with eight points on 10 shots. Jada Hollie had seven points to go with 10 rebounds. Princess Roberts had six points and 12 rebounds. Sul Ross State's Vania Hampton was the only player to score in double figures with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting.

Southwestern shot just 15-for-60 from the field (25 percent), including 5-for-26 from 3-point range. The Pirates also struggled from the free-throw line, shooting 8-for-15.

Southwestern drops to 2-4 with the loss. The Pirates will remain in Alpine, Texas, where they'll play Southwest (N.M.) tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
