Carraway's Double-Double Lead Pirates Past Howard Payne

GEORGETOWN - Junior Tori Carraway scored 15 points and pulled down 11 rebounds to lead the Southwestern University women's basketball team to a 57-49 win over Howard Payne on Sunday afternoon at the Robertson Center.

The Pirates shined on the defensive end, holding the Yellow Jackets to 18 of 71 (25%) shooting including 5 of 18 from deep (28%). On the other end, Southwestern was 22 of 59 (37%) from the field and outrebounded Howard Payne 48-44. Howard Payne won the turnover battle, 19-10, but Southwestern was still able to prevail.

After scoring the first two points, Howard Payne scored eight straight points for an 8-2 lead before the Pirates closed the gap to 10-8. Howard Payne this time went on a 7-0 run to lead 17-8 before the Pirates scored the final three points of the quarter to trail 17-11 after one.

The Yellow Jackets maintained their lead midway through the second half, leading by as many as nine as 26-17, but Southwestern responded by outscoring the Yellow Jackets in the final five minutes, 11-4, to find themselves down only 30-28 at the break.

After a slow start to the third quarter, the Pirates were finally able to tie the game at 32 behind free throws from sophomore Cecily Woolfolk, and then took the lead, 35-32 on a 3-pointer from senior Madison Lasater. It was all part of a 9-2 run that put Southwestern ahead 41-34 and gave the team a 45-37 lead going into the fourth.

The Pirates took their largest lead of the game at 48-37 behind a three from senior Madison Edwards and were able to finish the game off at the free throw line for the eight point home win, their first win at the Robertson Center this season.

Carraway was 7 of 16 from the field and added a block to her stat line while Edwards and Woolfolk each scored 11 in the contest including seven rebounds and a block. Senior Brooke Swift finished with four assists while freshman Noel Pratts had five points off the bench to go with a pair of steals. 

Valarie Matlock led Howard Payne with 14 points while Dominque Featherston had 12 boards. 

Southwestern moves to 2-3 on the season and will prepare for a rematch with Howard Payne on Saturday, this time heading to Brownwood for a 2 PM tip-off.
