Cold Start Costs Pirates

SEGUIN, Texas — Sluggish starts to each half doomed the Southwestern women's basketball team in a 75-60 loss to the Texas Lutheran University Bulldogs. 

Southwestern couldn't find the bottom of the net in the first quarter, shooting just 1-for-10 from the field and 3-for-6 from the free-throw line, while seven different Bulldogs scored to put the Pirates into an early 21-5 hole. 

In the second quarter, the Pirates steadied the ship with a pair of 3-pointers from Lauren Fulenwider and five points from Jada Hollie to outscore Texas Lutheran 19-16 and trail 37-24 at the break. 

Southwestern surrendered seven second-chance points in the third quarter off five offensive rebounds while shooting just 2-for-7 from the field, giving Texas Lutheran a 21-11 run and a 58-35 lead heading into the fourth quarter. 

The Pirates put together their strongest quarter in the fourth, scoring 25 points on 8-for-14 shooting, including 4-for-7 from deep. Texas Lutheran managed 17 points on 6-for-12 shooting.

Hollie led Southwestern with 16 points, hitting 5-for-11 from the field and 6-for-9 from the free-throw line. She also contributed three rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Fulenwider scored 15 points on 5-for-12 shooting from the 3-points line. 

Four Texas Lutheran players scored in double figures, led by Jayla Santa Maria's 16 points on 10 shots. Morgan Rodriguez, Kailee Mulkey, and Tanyse Moehrig scored 10 points each. Moehrig added 10 rebounds for the double-double.

After the loss, Southwestern drops to 8-9 with a 4-5 conference record. The Pirates will host the University of Dallas on Tuesday, Feb. 1, at 7:30 p.m.
